Your Social Security number is not your primary ID in the George Mason University Administrative
System. It is classified as an alternate ID number, and will never appear publicly on documentation
issued by the University.
A request to change your social security number in the Administrative System must be made in person
at the appropriate office.
For Students (who are not employed by the University):
Reasons to provide your Social Security Number (SSN) as an alternate ID in the George Mason
University Administrative System:
1. You are a recipient of federally funded financial aid.
2. You need to receive an IRS Form 1098-T as a tax recipient.
3. Future ease of use as alumni to request your academic records (transcript).
Your SSN will automatically be an alternate in the Administrative System if you were enrolled at
George Mason University prior to Fall 2004, used your Social Security number as your student ID
number, or used a system generated number but had provided your SSN as a prior or alternate SID.
Want to check to see if we have it? Attempt to log on to Patriot Web using your SSN as your User ID.
If the SSN is an alternate, you will be successful.
A request to add or change your Social Security number may be made by currently enrolled students
only, and must be made in person.
Please bring photo identification and your Social Security card to the Office of the University
Registrar in Student Union Building 1, Room 2101.
Contact the Registrar at (703) 993-2441 if you
have questions.
